Today, Nikon announced the release of two new waterproof and shockproof cameras. The Nikon Coolpix S32 and the Nikon Coolpix AW120. As you will see in this Nikon Coolpix S32 review, Nikon took into consideration some of the negative aspect of the S31 and produced a nice little camera here.
The Nikon Coolpix S32 is the successor to the S31. The Coolpix S31 is an awesome little camera. Durable and easy to use. However it lacked in the image quality department. Thankfully, in the new Coolpix S32, the camera boasts an all new 13.2-million pixel CMOS sensor providing excellent image quality. The camera is also equipped with an auto image overlay technology. This uses the fast processing sensor to produce greater quality of images in a large spectrum of lighting scenarios. It also aids in reduction of blurriness due to camera shake from hand holding cameras in low light places. A definite upgrade from the S32.
Considering the price of the Nikon Coolpix S32 and the upgraded technology from the S31, the features are not too bad. The user interface of the S32 is super easy. Yes, a child could use this camera. I can see this camera being a must have for going on vacation to the ocean with the family or for hanging out with friends at the pool. The ease of use makes it ideal for situations where you need to quickly snap a pic, or if you are not too technology oriented then this is perfect for you.
The S32 can withstand a fall from about 5 feet. This is nice because we all know children tend to drop things, or if you have had a few too many at the pool, then you won’t have to worry too much about dropping the camera. Obviously if your throw it across the parking lot just because, it may explode on impact. (If only my iPhone was shockproof, I’d save so much money.) The Coolpix S32 is also waterproof. It can withstand depths of up to 32 feet. The previous model could only withstand submersion up to 16 feet. So a pretty drastic improvement right there thanks to upgraded technology. Unless you are going on a deep sea dive, the waterproof feature should be more then sufficient .
One of my favorite features of the S32 is its ability to record 1920 x 1080/30p full-HD movies with stereo sound. This is pretty outstanding for an inexpensive camera in my opinion. The camera also has an HDMI output for playback on TV’s.
Design wise the Coolpix S32 is exactly what you would expect a small waterproof digital camera to be. Simple and sleek. The camera boasts a symmetrical design so younger children (or grandma) can hold it with two hands and it wont slip away nor will finger tips be filling the images. The camera is available in 4 colors; blue, yellow, white, and pink. I will take a pink one please.
Honestly, it all comes does to what you plan on doing with this camera. If you are looking for something that can withstand all different kinds of environments while still easily usable so children can take pictures too, then this is for you. The S32 will give you good picture quality at a price that is unmatched. I got mine on sale at Amazon for only $106.95. However, if you are an avid outdoors fan and plan on frequently using the camera outdoors and in more extreme situations (deep sea diving, sub zero temperatures, low light situations, sports, etc) then I would high suggest the faster, more rugged, and GPS equipped Nikon Coolpix AW120.
