Summary:

A must have in my opinion. Especially for wedding photographers.

When I first saw the Fstoppers Flash Disc I was immediately intrigued. It seemed like a great concept and the portability and ease of use could really come in handy.  I went ahead and split the cost with a fellow photographer since they are $50 for two and I would only be needing one. So far it has been one of the best investments I have made as far as portable lighting modifiers are concerned for flashes. In fact, I wish I had purchased two!

At only $25 each, I would highly suggest everyone to have this in your arsenal of tools. You can easily get super creative with this thing. I like it so much better than direct flash, or even a bounce flash which lights up the whole room. Below is a video where Lee Morris, creator of the flash disc, describes in detail the many features and uses of the unit.

  • Open Size: 12″ Diameter

Overview

The Fstoppers Flash Disc is a portable light modifier created by Fstoppers founders Patrick Hall and Lee Morris. When used on top of small DSLR speedlight flashes, the Flash Disc creates soft directional light that is perfect for situations when a large softbox is either impractical or obtrusive. Unlike other light modifiers, the Flash Disc uses bounced light to create a softer light than similar products the same size. Measuring just under 12″ in diameter, the Flash Disc can easily fold down and fit into a small 4″ pouch making it easy to carry with you at all times. Whether you shoot events, weddings, table top products, food and beverages, children, or simply enjoy traveling with minimal photo gear, the Flash Disc is the perfect modifier to soften up the harsh light from your speedlights.

My Review

First thing I noticed is that not only was it a lighting modifier, but the back of the disk has an 18% gray card, as well as white and black strips for setting your white balance in post processing. One of the things I love most about the flash disc is how easy it is to carry around. I literally carry it around in my back pocket at weddings. It is collapsible just like the very popular collapsible reflectors. It folds up to about the size of a large wallet. When you are ready to use it you can just fling it out and throw it onto your flash in seconds where it is held securely by high strength elastic. It is super fast and easy to use all while producing great light. The fall off is also very fast which I prefer at weddings receptions and similar events.

The inside of the unit is lined in silver reflective material (besides the front which is the white material to create a softbox). Unlike the previous version, the newer ones have the reflective material around the sides too which prevents light spill. The entire this is obviously round. This shape provide light that is very similar to a beauty dish. In some newer studio shots, it gives subjects a very beautiful round catch light.

Some of the best uses I have found for the flash disc are dancing reception shots, detail shots (rings, flowers, etc.), small group shots, and directional lighting shots. below are some shots from a recent wedding that I used the flash disc at.

As you can see the quality of light is actually VERY good when compared to other speed light modifiers. The light can be a tad harsh but when used in the right environment and paired with the correct settings, it can be used with amazing results.
