If you do not already follow Dustin Genereux, you need to! He is an awesome photographer out of Providence, Rhode Island who specializes in fashion and commercial portraiture. Dustin has a really cool style that fits perfectly in the fashion industry. One of the things that really stands out to me in his work would have to be how comfortable his models look in every image. Besides his photography, Dustin enjoys antiquing, and spending time with his super cool Boston Terrier, Sky (pictured below). If you are on the east coast and looking for some portraiture work, be sure to check him out!

1) How long have you been photographing people for and how did you start?
I’ve been shooting portraits since about 2005 but professionally since 2010. I started off with a Fuji Fine Pix in high school shooting friends and nature. I slowly developed a style and grew the courage to work with models and clients. I didn’t really start shooting professionally until I went to college and one of my favorite professors gave me that extra push and with his advice I started a career as a photographer.
2) What is some of the gear you use?
I currently shoot with a few different cameras that have drastic differences. My main body that I shoot with 90% of the time is a Nikon d90 with either a 85mm 1.8 or a 50mm 1.4. I work for Sony so I have the added benefit of using their camera systems and Zeiss lenses whenever I want to take them out. I recently started shooting with the Sony a99 with the 24-70mm Zeiss. For lighting I use the AlienBee 800’s with a few different modifiers. I just purchased a softlighter II and the results are amazing. It’s my new favorite modifier. But I use the Paul C Buff white beauty dish, a few different sized softboxes and octaboxes most of the time!
3) What inspires you?
I’ve always been interested in art and photography since I was young. I took as many art courses as I could throughout high school and I went to college for graphic design. When I picked up a camera for the first time I got hooked, as cliche as that sounds. But what inspires me are my piers. My closest friends and photographers I’ve had the pleasure of meeting through Instagram and Facebook. They have great insight about this industry and offer critiques whenever you need them. They also produce some beautiful work too! I would check out Elena Jasic, Derren Versoza, Jeff Roberts, and Holly Burnham. I get inspired by all their work.
4) Do you have any goals for your photography for 2014?
My goals for 2014 are to shoot more fashion, redefine my work, and do a photo series on my cross country trip I’m currently planning right now.
5) Any tips for working with models?
My tips would be to be yourself, be normal, offer guidance, inspire your models, have fun, joke, listen to music, be goofy. But above all else don’t be weird with models. News travels fast in this industry and you don’t want to be known as the creepy photographer!
6) How’s Sky doing?
Sky is doing great! She has her health issues but they are manageable and she will live a long full life. She’s a big goofball and has a big heart for such a small animal. She still plays and runs around like a crazy puppy!
